Eric Itzkin

Deputy Director: Immovable Heritage, City of Johannesburg

Eric Itzkin is the Deputy Director: Immovable Heritage in the City of Johannesburg. With a focus on heritage sites, monuments, commemorative practice and public art. For 20 years, he has championed the City’s public art programme, guiding the development of new artworks, often on heritage themes. Born in Johannesburg in 1961, he has worked as a teacher, research librarian, museum curator, cultural historian, and heritage manager. He is the author of the book “Gandhi’s Johannesburg: Birthplace of Satyagraha”, and of various articles on aspects of heritage. Eric holds a Master of Arts in Heritage Studies from the University of the Witwatersrand.
