Originally trained as a typesetter in Berlin/Germany, Gabriel Mohale went on to study Printing Technologies in Leipzig and subsequently worked for a Printing Press and Publishing House in Berlin. Coming to South Africa in 1991, Mohale later started working at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1996. She completed a BA (Information Science) through distance learning at the University of South Africa, and a MA (Heritage Studies) by coursework and research report at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2009. Having worked at the Historical Papers Research Archive since 2007, she became increasingly involved in digitisation projects that were initiated by Historical Papers, and was eventually part of the establishment of the Wits Digitisation Centre, as well as training programmes in the field of digitisation of heritage, funded by the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). From 2012 Mohale was actively involved in the successful implementation of the Historical Papers archival digital repository based on the open-access application Access to Memory (AtoM) as one of the first Universities in South Africa. At the same time, Historical Papers was also instrumental in accentuating the role and status of archives in civil society, something which I became passionate about in recent years. From 2020 she served as a bureau member of the Section on University and Research Institution Archives (SUV), of the International Council on Archives (ICA).
