Steve Kwena Mokwena

Curator Robben Island Museum, Heritage Department, and Founder and Curator of the Afrikan Freedom Station

Steve Kwena Mokwena is a cultural activist, artist, curator, and award-winning documentary filmmaker with a background in history and a focus on youth development. He has experience in research, interpretation, exhibition design, and art creation. Currently, he serves as the curator at Robben Island Museum (RIM) in Cape Town.

Born in Soweto, South Africa, he studied in South Africa and the UK and has worked and travelled in Afrika, United Stated of America, Latin America, and Europe.

Kwena is the founder the Afrikan Freedom Station, an Afrocentric multi-media gallery in Sophiatown, Johannesburg, known for jazz and art. Kwena has also been the executive producer of two award winning jazz albums, Afrikan Time by Herbie Tsoaeli and Umdali by Malcom Jiyane.
